The Week of Thursday, December 4, 2008

This week students completed many tasks. The following is a quick overview of each grade.

First: Students visited www.enchantedlearning.com to use an online picture dictionary. Their task was to find three words in the dictionary and copy the definition of each word. This is an excellent resource for emergent readers. There are also fun crafts to try at home!

Second: Students wrote an acrostic poem using the letters in the word SANTA. Students did a final draft on Microsoft Word and learned to change font size, font style, and insert a piece of clip art. They were also introduced to spell check.

Third: Students visited http://weather.com to find and record the expected high temperature for Redford, Michigan for the next five days. Next week students will learn to take that data and create a bar graph.

Fourth: Students visited http://www.quick.org.uk/menu.htm to learn eight ways of checking information on web sites. There is a quiz at the end of the Checklist Summary for students to take. We have been discussing how to know if a website is worthwhile as well as what information a web site's URL provides. We are going to be spending a lot of time on how to complete a good search for information.
